The Drowning People was my attempt to tell the story of a man’s life backwards, from the age of 70, in his own words. It’s a book about consequences and family secrets, and the crazy things you do the first time you fall in love.
Us sets out to discover what happens to a group of people when a charismatic young woman draws them into a dangerous game, and then disappears forever.
My great-grandmother was interned by the British in a concentration camp during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1901. The Lighted Rooms began as an act of homage to her, and the writing of it took me on a journey that ended up encompassing dementia, rare metals, forgotten conflicts, nursing homes, stock market bubbles, middle-aged passion and Victorian erotica.
